In memory of R J “Bob” Leonard The Book

R J Leonard’s

In the Blink
of a Cow’s Eye.

Bob Leonard gave the last thirty years of his life to animals. This book is his record of that work: the wins, the losses, and what it takes to build a movement from the ground up. It began in 1995, when a cow walked out of a roadside herd along California’s Highway 1 to meet him. It ends as his invitation to carry the work on.

Is there a destiny out there

Waiting for each of us.

For thirty years, Bob Leonard dismissed the idea of fate. Then, on a hazy afternoon along California’s Highway 1 in 1995, a cow walked out of a roadside herd to meet him, and nothing about how he saw animals was ever the same again. Four articles from the book, told here in full.

Remembering Bob.

R J “Bob” Leonard

A life in the field,
a story he made sure was told.

After a successful business career, Bob Leonard spent more than two decades as a grassroots animal rights activist.

Through his work organizing and supporting coalitions at the local, regional, and national levels, he contributed to efforts that saved thousands of animals.

He served, always unpaid, in leadership roles with Delaware Action for Animals, Delaware Wetland Volunteers, GeesePeace in Delaware, the Mid-Atlantic Animal Rights Coalition, Animal Rights and Vegan Advocacy in Palm Beach County, and Florida Wildlife Advocates.

He lived in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, with his canine companion, Darwin.

He believed lasting progress for animals comes from community-based, multi-issue advocacy groups: people organizing where they live. This book is how he passed that on.

In memory of Bob.

Carry it forward.

Bob spent his life making sure animals had someone in their corner. Here are three ways to keep that going.

Read it.

His story, in his own words, from the first cow on Highway 1 to the coalitions he built.

Share it.

The book finds its readers one recommendation at a time. Send this page to someone who cares about animals.

Act.

Bob’s advice was simple: find the people near you who are already doing the work, and join them. A local advocacy group, a sanctuary, a rescue, a wildlife coalition. Start where you live.

As an Amazon Associate, this site earns a small commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. Those commissions cover hosting and upkeep, so Bob’s story stays online without cost to his family. Proceeds from the book itself first go toward covering its publishing costs. Once those are covered, Bob’s family plans to work with the nonprofit Vegans Explore to support animal organizations, rescues, and community groups in cities around the world.
